It All Fits Together Exhibition

My piece titled “It All Fits Together” was featured in an exhibition called “Stories Connecting Generations,” which took place at Kent State University. The work is a result of the experiences, lessons, and advice that I received from conversations with an elderly woman, with the goal of communicating her life wisdom in visual form.
In our first conversation, she said that I am a “very bright bright person” which was so nice and made my heart warm. I found her to be a kind lady who lived a fulfilling life full of traveling and exploring diverse cultures. It turned out that she and I have a lot in common—we both enjoy traveling, teaching, and helping people. Her career in social work relates to my interest in healthcare. Before pursuing social work, my partner was a teacher. She left her teaching career to pursue a Master’s degree in social work which was one of the hardest decisions of her life. She said, “As I look back, the teaching experience has ended up being a positive part of the social work and the work with children experience in general—I see that it all fits together.” As I was reflecting on my life and trying to figure out my career path, I found that I have an interest in teaching, design, and healthcare. It's nice to hear someone say it all worked out and life was the way it was supposed to be.
She also explained how she had an unexplainable emotional connection when she visited Ireland, which is how I felt when I visited Pakistan. I think we both felt a connection because these are places where our families came from.
On the exhibit wall, there are images of places that she’s traveled, varying in size to show the idea that pieces are coming together. Her pieces of wisdom are written on postcards, and placed throughout the wall. Corkboards are placed in between the images for viewers to interact with the wall, allowing them to create collages with travel images and postcards, where they can write descriptions or their personal quotes. The goal was to inspire people to travel and explore different cultures.
